Irish eligible Dan Crowley returns to English football with Morecambe after stint in the Netherlands

DAN CROWLEY has returned to English football to join League One outfit Morecambe on a short-term deal.

The 25-year-old Irish eligible star has been in the Netherlands for the past year with second-tier Willem II.

Crowley was a bright prospect as a teenager with Arsenal forking out to sign him from Aston Villa as a 16-year-old while Ireland and England also vyed for his services.

Having failed to make the grade with the Gunners, he thrived in the Netherland with Willem II during his first spell there in 2019, before a switch to Birmingham.

But he returned to the Netherlands last year with Willem II again, though he admitted a return to England now was too good to resist.

He said: “I’ve watched a fair bit of Morecambe over the past few weeks, and the team looks to be full of confidence and picking up some good results.

“Hopefully, as a team we can really push on further between now and the end of the season.

“I’ve missed English football, having spent the last year out in Holland.

“There’s nothing quite like playing at 3pm on a Saturday, so to be back in English football and playing for Morecambe is something I’m really looking forward to.”

Morecambe boss Derek Adams added: “Daniel is a really talented player, and is someone we are really pleased to have here.

“He can play as a number ten, a midfield player or out wide, and he brings a real ability to open up defences and create assists and score goals from various positions.

“He’s played in the Championship here in England and played in the top division in Holland, so between now and the end of the season, he’s going to be a really good signing for us.”
