PEPPER PIKE, Ohio -- Orange High School student scientists recently had the opportunity to learn firsthand how blood-typing labs operate and to discover their own blood types.

Under the direction of OHS science teachers Sandra Drvenkar and Jim Vaca, with hands-on guidance and assistance from school nurse Mary Massey, students studying forensics participated in an ABO blood-typing lab earlier this school year.

According to a news release from the Orange City School District, the students learned how to decipher which blood type they are by mixing a drop of their own blood sample with serums containing anti-A antibodies, anti-B antibodies and Rh factor.

The sample was then checked to see whether or not the blood cells stick together to determine each individual’s blood type.

Strategic plan survey

The Orange City School District is in the process of creating a strategic plan. Anonymous feedback from its families and community members will provide valuable information to the Board of Education.

A survey for parents and community members only will run through Feb. 17. The district encourages these groups to take a few minutes to share their input.

To complete the survey, visit orangeschools.org and click on the survey link.

In addition to the survey, parents and community members are encouraged to attend a focus group. These online focus groups will be held at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Feb. 7. The link to these sessions will be shared soon by the district.

‘Cocoa and Cram’ session

The Orange High School Student Government Association hosted its second annual “Cocoa and Cram” session Jan. 12 in the OHS Media Center.

The informal event, open to all OHS students, offered the students an area to study, collaborate, work on review packets, ask questions and have a cup of hot chocolate and snack as they prepared for their midterms.

Staff members and alumni volunteered their time after school to assist the students as they studied various subjects, including history, chemistry and French.

Art students recognized

Orange High School art students were honored to participate in the Scholastic Art and Writing Competition Gallery opening earlier in January at the Cleveland Institute of Art.

The Gold and Silver Key recipients were among those listed in the 2023 Art and Writing Awards announcement in December. Their efforts were recognized by a panel of creative professionals as the “most outstanding work submitted” among their peers.

During the ceremony, artist Leigh Brooklyn spoke, along with various award donors who congratulated the students on their achievements.
