Jefferson City is asking for volunteers to serve on city boards and commissions, the city wrote in a recent news release.

The city said it has openings on several boards, committees and commissions, and is asking for people interested to apply to become a volunteer member. Among its 28 boards, the following have available positions: the Animal Shelter Advisory Committee, Cemetery Resources Board, Environmental Quality Commission, Cultural Arts Commission, Historic Preservation Commission, Human Relations Commission and the Tax Increment Finance Commission.

People who serve have different roles depending on the board or commission -- some are able to exercise city functions, while others are purely advisory. Additional information on membership is listed on the city's website under the tab "Citizen boards, commissions and committees."

People who want to volunteer can fill out an application that is linked on the city's website and email it to [email protected] or return it by mail at the address City of Jefferson, Administration Department, 320 E. McCarty St., Jefferson City, Missouri, 65101.

Some boards or commissions do not require city residency as a factor of the application but require certification in a specific field instead.

Today, the City Council will vote on a bill, which if approved, provides the option of allowing another non-resident to serve on the Human Relations Commission.

The commission essentially works to promote equality through education programs. It is made up of eight members. One non-resident is already permitted to serve, the bill asked to allow two.

According to information provided by city staff on Jan. 6, below is the number of current vacancies in each board or commission:

• Animal Shelter Advisory Committee, one opening.

• Cemetery Resources Board, one opening.

• Cultural Arts Commission, one opening.

• Environmental Quality Commission, one opening.

• Historic Preservation Commission, two openings.

• Human Relations Commission, two openings.

• Tax Increment Finance Commission, two openings.
