Thierry Mugler’s Show Brings Leather, Lace And Darkness To Paris Fashion Week

Following

It has been just over a year since the passing of French fashion designer, Thierry Mugler. He passed away on January 23, 2022 at the age of 73.

Just this week, industry insiders paid tribute to Mugler on the one year anniversary of his passing, like supermodel Cindy Crawford, who posted a clip to a 1991 runway show.

Now, for the Haute-Couture Spring-Summer 2023 Fashion Week in Paris, Mugler's creative director Casey Cadwallader put a different spin on the Mugler brand for the runway show on January 26. Yes, it was full of theatrics—but in a different way.

While Mugler’s older works are marked with a technicolor flair—I mean, come on, just look at his well-deserved Brooklyn Museum retrospective Couturissime, which runs until May 7—the feathers and sequins are traded in for leather and lace.

But this runway show almost mourned the designer with an black-clad catwalk, chock full of lace veils, gowns and a romantic touch of the macabre.

It wasn’t just what, but who. The star-studded runway featured Pose star Dominique Jackson donning a lace bodysuit, with matching veil, while supermodel legend Debra Shaw smiled on the runway, as she wore a turtleneck-like neck piece (very Parisian), with an asymmetrical blazer-esque dress full of billowed fabric.

Other stars that made their way onto the Mugler runway included late night talk show host Ziwe, as well as model Irina Shak, who wore an off the shoulder minidress, and Anok Yai, who truly stole the show with a heightened sense of drama.

Arca, a Venezuelan pop star, also walked the runway under a sole spotlight. The dramatic lighting gave the show an old school film noir vibe, even with a large screen projecting the moment behind them. The front row was filled with as many stars on the catwalk too, like Lisa Rinna, Kylie Minogue and Charlie XCX.

Overall, this Mugler collection is like boudoir meets biker chic, the inner and outer self. The runway was full of attitude, of course, but not without a bit of gothic flair, like if the Addams Family were trying to get into Berghain. The poofy power dresses were a highlight, so were the scowls.
