LAVAL, Que. - On Monday night, some of the best young talents in hockey, along with a few deserving veterans, head to the outer reaches of Montreal to compete in this year’s AHL All-Star Classic.

LASHOFF LEADS THE CREW

The lone representative from the Grand Rapids Griffins in this year’s event will be one of their elder statesmen. Captain Brian Lashoff will be wearing the ‘C’ for the Central Division All-Stars, making his first ASG appearance in professional hockey. It has certainly been a long time coming for the veteran defenseman, as he is just a few days removed from playing in his 750th game in his pro hockey career. He will be the fifth Griffin to captain an All-Star team, joining the likes of Travis Richards (2004), Kip Miller (2007), Jeff Hoggan (2016) and Matthew Ford (2020).

SOME FAMILIAR FACES

There will be a couple of other folks with Michigan, and Grand Rapids ties participating in the event. Current Hershey Bears head coach will be on the Atlantic Division’s bench. The former Griffin defenseman helped lead the team to the 2017 Calder Cup, also coaching the Western Conference in the 2017 All-Star Classic.

One of the defensemen on his team will be Xavier Ouellet, who split time between the Griffins and Detroit Red Wings from 2013-18. This will be the current Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguin’s second ASG appearance.

Two other Atlantic Division rookies that many in West Michigan might remember are Providence Bruins’ goaltender Brandon Bussi, Lehigh Valley Phantoms’ defenseman Ronnie Attard and Ethen Frank of the Hershey Bears. All three were members of a Western Michigan Broncos team that made it to the NCAA Tournament last season, helping the program win its first tournament game as well. Frank currently is tied for the league lead in rookie goal scoring with the Iowa Wild’s Sammy Walker, both players having 21 goals heading into the break.

Another player that fans in GR might remember, who will be joining Lashoff in the Central Division lineup, is Riley Barber. The current Texas Star played 81 games over the last couple of seasons with the Griffins.

HOW IT WORKS

The event is similar to the current ASG format used by the NHL, as all four divisions in the league have their own teams, competing in a 3-on-3 tournament. What is different is that each division will play against one another in 10-minute games. The team with the best record at the end of the round-robin tournament will play for the championship.
