University of Denver guard Coban Porter charged with vehicular homicide in two-car crash

Coban Porter, the younger brother of Denver Nuggets forward Michael Porter Jr., was arrested Sunday and charged with vehicular homicide and reckless driving, according to Denver police.

The two-car crash happened just before 2 a.m. Sunday near the University of Denver, where Porter is a sophomore on the basketball team.

The driver of the other vehicle died at the scene, according to police.

According to a Denver Police Department probable cause statement, "the investigation revealed that the Defendant was driving at an estimated speed of 50 MPH, EB on E Buchtel Blvd and ran the red light at S University Blvd striking the victim vehicle that was traveling NB on S University Blvd."

A policeman interviewed Porter at the scene and wrote, "The Defendant (redacted) and while speaking he displayed bloodshot and watery eyes, slurred and mumbling speech, and the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath."

Michael Porter Jr. did not play in the Nuggets’ game on Sunday against Oklahoma City due to personal reasons.

Coban Porter, a 21-year-old 6-5 shooting guard, has not played this season after sustaining a torn ACL in the offseason. Last season, Porter appeared in 28 games, averaging 11.4 points and shooting 41.3% on 3-pointers.

University of Denver forward Coban Porter, right, hasn't played this season because of an injury.
