American network Showtime announced the launch of the new programme as well as commissioning another new series of the spin-off New Blood, which follows Harrison, the son of Dexter.

Dexter, played by Michael C. Hall, follows the life of the title character, a scientist, and originally ran between 2006 and 2013 where it became a firm fan favourite.

The scientist lived a double life merged with that of a serial killer and now viewers will finally get to see just how he became to be his notorious self in the brand new show.

It is expected to begin with Dexter's graduation from collage before showing him joining the Miami Metro Police.

Announcing the new series, a synopsis for the show read: "It will dramatize young Dexter Morgan at the outset of his transition into the avenging serial killer he would become.

"Set in the Miami that was a hotbed of real serial killers of his time, the show will begin as Dexter graduates college to join Miami Metro, where he meets younger versions of many of the characters we came to know in the original Dexter.

"And, of course, the show will also focus on Dexter’s family, including a very-much-alive Harry and a very formidable, teenage Deb."

The original series, set in Miami, centered on forensic technician Dexter Morgan, who specializes in bloodstain pattern analysis for the fictional Miami Metro Police Department.

Aside from his day job, he leads a secret parallel life as a vigilante serial killer, putting his thirst for justice to use by hunting down murderers who have avoided convictions for their crimes.

52 year old Micheal won critical praise for his role and famously picked up a Golden Globe for his portrayal of the dastardly serial killer.

However, he and fans alike, expressed disappointment at the original series outcome which featured Dexter moving to Oregon to start a new life rather than be held accountable for his crimes.

He previously admitted: "The show ended in a way that was infuriating."

The actor added to Times Radio: "I think the show ended in a way that was pretty mystifying at best if not infuriating for people.

"But that at least set the stage for us to return and answer more definitively what the hell happened to this guy.

"I totally support what happened, the choice he makes at the end, but as far as the execution goes, we were all running on vapour at that point, so I get it."
