Ohio COVID-19 cases dip to lowest level since April: weekly coronavirus update for Thursday, Jan. 19

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The number of new COVID-19 cases in Ohio fell sharply again, from 10,188 last week to 7,961 this week.

The last time that the state’s weekly case number fell below 8,000 was in April.

Ohio had been over 10,000 cases per week every week, except for brief dips, since the beginning of May. Weekly case numbers dipped below 10,000 again for two weeks in October.

The number of COVID-19 patients in Ohio hospitals dipped to 892 on Thursday from a recent high of 1,423 on Dec. 29.

This week’s case total averages to about 1,137 cases per day over seven days.

Total reported COVID-19 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic were 41,249.

The total COVID-19 case count since early 2020 has now reached 3,339,612.

A total of 7,559,522 Ohioans have received at least one vaccination, representing about 68.1% of Ohioans age 5 and up.

Since the beginning of 2021, there have been 26,166 deaths among people reported as unvaccinated, and 1,462 among people reported to be fully vaccinated. And there have been 85,039 hospitalized Ohioans who were not fully vaccinated, and 6,374 fully vaccinated people hospitalized.

The state does not report for COVID-19 cases whether people were vaccinated.

* Total reported ICU admissions: 14,837, up 27.
