Ford Motor Company has issued a recall affecting 462,000 vehicles worldwide over a potential video output failure in the affected cars’ review cameras.
According to the automaker, the recall affects some Explorers and Lincoln Aviators from the 2020-2023 model year, as well as Lincoln Corsairs from 2020-2022 that are equipped with 360-degree cameras.
Ford explained that in late 2021 and 2022, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) informed it about reports of a blue image in the rear-view camera display – this warning was raised after Ford had just completed an earlier recall in 2021. There were reports of 17 minor crashes related to the issue, and over 2,100 warranty reports, but no reports of injuries. The NHTSA’s notice prompted Ford to investigate further into the issue.
“On certain vehicles equipped with a 360-degree camera, a software problem could cause the rearview camera image to not appear on the SYNC display screen,” information from Transport Canada’s website said of the camera issue. “Canadian regulations require the rearview image to display when the transmission is shifted into reverse gear.”
The recall affects some 382,000 vehicles in the US, Reuters reported. Meanwhile, Transport Canada stated that the recall affects 39,674 vehicles in Canada.
Ford will notify owners of the affected vehicles by mail and instruct them to take their vehicles to a dealer to update their vehicles’ image processing module (IPMB) software.
Last year, Ford entered into a partnership with State Farm Insurance, to allow the insurer to provide Ford’s customers with a usage-based insurance (UBI) product. State Farm’s Drive Safe & Save” solution adjusts policyholders’ premiums to their vehicles’ mileage and their driving behaviors, utilizing Ford’s onboard connected vehicle technology to track these metrics.
