Somewhere in the metaphorical vintage hall of fame, a second-life savant is affixing a plaque with Miley Cyrus’s name to the wall. Barely a fortnight after the Tennessee-born pop superstar welcomed in the new year sporting an ombré Versace spring/summer 2006 gown and a sparkling, one-shouldered dress from Bob Mackie’s autumn/winter 2002 collection, she’s back on our screens in gleaming, goddess-draped vintage Yves Saint Laurent.
Miley’s Midas touch? An amphorae-shaped hooded cut-out gown from Yves Saint Laurent’s autumn/winter 1991/92 collection, imagined in metallic lamé, and worn around the winding panoramic roads of Los Angeles in her new “Flowers” video.
Cyrus is no stranger to Yves Saint Laurent. The singing sensation has a wardrobe of rock‘n’roll pieces designed by the French maison’s current creative director, Anthony Vaccarello. Take the plunging floral autumn/winter 2018 minidress she wore when singing on Saturday Night Live that year, or the spring/summer 2022 slinky spandex catsuit she wore to perform on Jimmy Fallon in December 2021. The brand’s current spring/summer 2023 offering is, in part, a tribute to its historical hooded silhouettes, featuring fluid jersey gowns with shrouding proportions, which have appealed to stars including Olivia Wilde, Kate Moss and Blackpink’s Rosé on the red carpet.
The wardrobe Cyrus plans to sport while promoting her upcoming album Endless Summer Vacation appears to be well-stocked with vintage treasures. With a stage wardrobe brimming with Bob Mackie, Versace and Yves Saint Laurent… what mega piece will she stage a mic drop with next?
