Patrick Kopke must repay $158,170

Patrick Kopke, who resigned as finance director of the Nebraska State Fair in November 2019, was sentenced to jail and probation Friday for stealing from the fair.Kopke must repay the fair $158,170.60, at the rate of $1,000 per month, in addition to serving 30 days in jail and 15 years probation.And he must undergo counseling for a gambling addiction.A judge in Grand Island found Kopke guilty in August of three counts of theft by unlawful taking. An audit found Kopke registered a business in 2019 and then paid that business around $150,000 from Nebraska State Fair funds.Under 'Nature of Business' the LLC listed 'Not Available' for Kopke's venture.Additionally, Kopke used fair funds to buy himself a truck, and several expensive dinners.Auditors found checks allegedly signed by the fair's executive director actually appeared to be made by a signature stamp.Kopke apologized for his actions during his court appearance Friday. He was ordered to begin his jail sentence immediately.
