Port Huron High School is getting closer to selecting a new mascot.

The field of finalists has been narrowed to two — Panthers and Red Hawks — after more than 800 votes were cast by students, staff and the community in last week’s mascot election.

“No mascot received the required majority — 51% — of votes,” Principal Mike Palmer said in a news release. “The Panthers and Red Hawks were clear favorites and now move on as the finalists. There will now be a run-off election.”

Community voting will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 8 to 10 at the PHS Early Childhood Center and Port Huron High School and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. March 10 at Port Huron High. ID will be required for community voters. Students and staff will be voting while in school.

“I am really proud of the Port Huron High School staff and student body,” said Superintendent Theo Kerhoulas. “They have embraced this process from the beginning and made it exciting for everyone involved.”

In November, the school board unanimously voted to retire the Little Chiefs, Little Reds and Big Reds mascots at Michigamme and Roosevelt elementary schools and the high school.

Last week’s election bumped Red Storm and Red Knights out of the running.
