Mapúa Institute of Technology

Founded on January 25, 1925, by Don Tomas Mapúa, an architecture graduate of Cornell University and the first registered Filipino architect, Mapúa Institute of Technology was envisioned as an educational institution that would emphasize the importance of science and technology and create an impact on the economy and quality of life of Filipinos. The biggest engineering school in the Philippines, Mapúa has campuses in Intramuros, Manila, and in Makati City and has wholly-owned subsidiaries, the Malayan Colleges Laguna and Malayan High School of Science in Manila.

Providing high-quality education for 91 years, as evidenced by its many topnotchers in Philippine professional licensure examinations, Mapúa now stands as the Philippines' premier technological institute and biggest engineering school.

Under the ownership of the Yuchengco Goup of Companies since the turn of the century, Mapúa has in recent years trained its eyes on the global arena. It is the first school in Southeast Asia to have ABET-accredited programs in engineering and computing. It has actively formed international linkages with prestigious companies for specialization tracks in its academic programs, for international on-the-job trainings and for research, among others.

As a move towards realizing its vision to be among the best universities in the world and to start a wave in international accreditations in the Philippines, Mapúa had its programs accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET: Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Environmental and Sanitary Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. Two of its programs are also accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET: Computer Science and Information Technology. These accreditations open up opportunities for Mapúans to bring their expertise, skills, and knowledge anywhere in the world.

Mapúa aims to provide a state-of-the-art and cutting-edge education to its students. Thus it continuously develops progressive and innovative approaches that will effectively bolster its efforts—ensuring world-class standards of its programs, along with the further development of the capability and expertise of its faculty—honing and shaping young individuals to be ready in the world of practice.

The Institute also creates opportunities for student exposure to the international scene and experience business operations in a global scale to become industry-ready once they graduate. Mapúa conducts student exchange programs, international plant visits, research internships, and international summer programs for both local and foreign students.

Mapúa, also, continuously forges partnerships and linkages with institutions and universities all over the globe to beef up its research capability. One of its biggest achievements is the establishment of its own research center, housing various state-of-the-art laboratory equipment to support research needs. Presently, Mapúa is engaging in membrane technology research—a separation process commonly used for the creation of process water from groundwater, surface water or wastewater.

To this day, Mapua continues to produce globally competitive professionals from its international student body particularly in the fields of engineering, architecture, information technology, business, and social science.

Mapúan professionals have blazed a trail for Philippine science and technology as they go out into the world equipped with the world-class knowledge and skills the institute has imparted. The Institute's roster of alumni has proven their excellence and expertise in their chosen fields of practice, leadership in their respective spheres of activities, and contributions for the welfare of the school, the community, and the world. Indeed, they are solid proofs of Mapúa's capability in producing globally competitive professionals. Some of these alumni are serving in the academe contributing to the technological prowess of the Philippines. Several of them, on the other hand, merged technology and entrepreneurship, making breakthroughs in setting up their own corporations, while others have gone to different fields.

With 91 years of proven excellence, Mapúa is once again strategizing an advancement of its game plan for the challenges and opportunities in the coming years to stay on top of the roster of the best engineering and technological schools in the country, if not the world.
