Sheriff Joe Lopinto said deputies were initially called to a gas station in the area to assist a man who claimed someone was chasing him and threatening his life. Lopinto told WDSU the man was with a car that had two flat tires.
According to deputies on the scene, the man began acting erratically while waiting for a tow truck.
The sheriff said he got into a "prolonged fight" with deputies and brandished a weapon, pointed it at deputies, and eventually fired a single shot. That is when one deputy returned fire, killing the man inside the gas station, according to Lopinto.
WDSU has learned there is likely body camera video and surveillance footage from inside the gas station of the incident.
