1 killed, 4 injured in Ohio Turnpike crash

OXFORD TOWNSHIP, ERIE COUNTY - One person was killed and four people were injured, including three young children, in a crash on the Ohio Turnpike Friday evening.

The Ohio Highway Patrol said a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee being driven by Gilbert Jordan, Jr., 30, of Corry, Pennsylvania, went off the right side of the road, struck the guardrail, and became disabled in the westbound center lane of the turnpike near mile marker 116.5 at 7:32 p.m. Friday.

Jordan and five passengers in the Jeep — Effie Carder, 26, a 4-year-old female, a 3-year-old male, and a 2-year-old female, all of Corry, Pennsylvania — exited the vehicle in an attempt to get off the roadway, the patrol said in a news release.

A 2023 Freightliner semitrailer driven westbound by Akeeva Stinson, age 27, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, struck the Jeep and the five pedestrians.

Carder sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced dead at thescene. Jorden and the three juveniles sustained serious injuries and weretransported by LifeCare EMS to Firelands Regional Medical Center. Stinson was notinjured.

The Ohio Turnpike was closed westbound for approximately three hours while the crashwas investigated by troopers. The Ohio Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by theGroton Township Fire Department, LifeCare EMS, Interstate Towing, and Ohio TurnpikeMaintenance.

The crash remains under investigation
