SCOTTSDALE — Four coyotes have been euthanized after two toddler attacks in March, according to the Arizona Game and Fish Department.
Officials say the first incident happened on Saturday at Aztec Park, near 100th Street and Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard. On Wednesday, another toddler was attacked at a house about two miles south of the first incident. Both toddlers were treated for minor injuries.
Officials said the coyote may have been illegally fed in the past and thus showed little fear of people.
The department originally said one coyote was believed to be responsible for the attacks, but during the search, trapped and euthanized four coyotes.
No further coyote-related attacks have been reported, so officials have concluded their search.
To discourage coyotes and other wild animals from taking up residence in popular areas, the department offers the following tips:
- Don't feed the wildlife.
- Remove pet food, water bowls, garbage and other attractants.
- Feed pets inside and don't leave them unattended.
- Don't let coyotes feel comfortable in your neighborhood. Spray them with a hose, throw pebbles in their direction, light up the area at night, or bang pots and pans.
- Secure garbage containers.
- Keep an eye on small children.
If you encounter a coyote:
- Make loud noises, keep eye contact, but do not turn and run away.
- Shout and bang pots and pans or rattle empty soda cans with pebbles in it and wave your hands or objects.
- Make yourself appear larger and yell in low loud tones.
- Move toward other people, a building, or and area with activity.
- Call 911 if a coyote has bitten a person and seek immediate medical attention.
