BAY CITY, MI - On Friday, March 24, officials made the call to cancel school at Bay City Central High School due to an alleged threat against the school.

“We had a note put on a door that was found early this morning,” said Stephen Bigelow, Bay City Public Schools superintendent to MLive.

“We have to take that seriously,” he added.

The note contained a threat to shoot up the school, according to the Bay City Department of Public Safety. The note was discovered by school personnel on one of the entrance doors to the school, police said.

Officers from the department responded to the school at 6:15 a.m. on Friday in response to the note and searched the school and the surrounding area. Nothing was found other than the note, police said.

In addition to classes being canceled, all activities scheduled at Central today were canceled, including extracurricular events, meetings and performances. The district stated that it will provide updates on any plans for rescheduling these activities.

In a notice to parents, Bigelow stated that the school is working closely with the Bay City Department of Public Safety, which is currently investigating this incident.

“We understand that this situation may cause anxiety and concern among our students, staff, and community members,” said Bigelow in the notice. “We appreciate your understanding and support as we navigate this situation.”

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call the Bay City Department of Public Safety at 989-892-8571 or the non-emergency number to Bay County Central Dispatch at 989-892-9551. Individuals can also provide information anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-422-JAIL (5245), download the P3 mobile app or go to P3Tips.com. The incident comes one day after another threat in the district that turned out to be a hoax. Bay City Western went into secure mode on Thursday, March 23 due to a fake threat on social media.
