For the most discerning among us, a love of luxury does not stop simply at clothes but extends to most every part of life – from surrounding ourselves with the finest interiors and using the most cutting-edge skincare, to jetting off on fabulous, far-flung trips. And now, there's luxury for babies too.
As designer childrenswear continues its inexorable rise, mummy-and-me dressing becomes ever more popular, and with Mother's Day just around the corner, Louis Vuitton has perfectly timed its debut venture into the sector with the launch of its first ever Baby Collection. And, naturally, the fashion world can't get enough.
Think sweet cashmere onesies, cotton co-ords, mini monogrammed shoes and super-soft knitted blankets, all specially designed for babies up to 12 months – and in all honesty, their parents too. For beyond the joy that comes with giving little ones the very best from birth, it's they who will marvel at the exquisite craft that has gone into a monogrammed canvas baby wardrobe, for example, or enjoy the adorable endeavour of packing their child's belongings into a miniature LV suitcase.
This much was evident at yesterday's exclusive lunch held by Louis Vuitton and designer Sabine Getty to celebrate the collection's launch. High up in the chic, flower-filled apartment above the brand's flagship New Bond Street store, a select group of London's most inspiring and creative mothers and mothers-to-be came together for a first look at LV Baby – and the buzz was palpable.
The likes of Princess Beatrice of York, actor Clara Paget, entrepreneur Sharmadean Reid, businesswoman Veronica Chou, Royal Ballet principal Lauren Cuthbertson, and designer Tabitha Simmons could be heard cooing over the tiny beanies, mittens and romper suits in delicate shades of yellow, pink, blue and white – while Getty admitted she was eyeing up the multi-coloured socks for herself. 'I wish they made them in adult size,' she laughed. 'They'd look so cute with my tennis shoes!'
'I'm so excited about this collection,' continued Getty. 'It used to be that you would shop for your clothes and your children's clothes from completely different brands. So it feels like such a natural move to be able to get both from the same place, where you can fully trust the quality and aesthetic. And obviously, you only want the very best for your baby.'
