The victim of the killing was visiting Sanabria's wife when he was shot multiple times by Sanabria, police said.

There was a brief pursuit before Sanabria stopped and engaged officers in the area of Northwest 15th Avenue and Sistrunk Boulevard, officials said.

Several officers opened fire on the suspect, Fort Lauderdale Police Chief Patrick Lynn said.

"Our officers took the action that they felt was necessary to defend themselves," Lynn told reporters at a news conference.

Sanabria was taken to Broward General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Lynn didn't say if the suspect was armed or had shot at officers.

Police said a pedestrian was struck by the suspect's truck during the pursuit when the truck left the roadway and veered onto the property of a business in the 800 block of Northwest 7th Street. That man was taken to the hospital where he was in critical condition.

Surveillance footage froma nearby business showed the chaos as the suspect's silver Dodge Ram came barreling down a street with police on his tail.

The man who was struck was identified by family members as Fred Hall. His cousin, Labrent Gray, said Hall was working on a car outside an auto shop when the fleeing truck rammed into a car that pined Hall against a wall.

"He was working on a car and before they got to this point. He turned the corner and pushed him into a building," Gray said.

Witness Lisette Sanchez said she heard the commotion from her office nearby.

“I saw cop cars flying around the corner. They were driving all around the building so they came from all directions," Sanchez said. “After the boom we came out to the gate to see what was going on and two minutes later we heard a whole bunch of gun shots, pow pow pow, it was a couple of them.”

The incident remains under investigation. The shooting will be investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which is standard procedure.
