Influential labor groups now say they are opposing efforts to move two professional sports franchises from the nation’s capital to northern Virginia, partially due to the apparent inability to reach a satisfactory deal for union workers on the construction projects.

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin has a tentative agreement with the parent company of the NBA's Washington Wizards and NHL's Washington Capitals to move those teams out of D.C. to northern Virginia. Youngkin, a Republican, says the plan calls for a $2 billion sports and entertainment complex in Alexandria, across the Potomac from the nation's capital. Monumental Sports & Entertainment CEO Ted Leonsis appeared with Youngkin at a Wednesday news conference and endorsed the proposal. Monumental also owns the WNBA's Mystics. Leonsis says Capital One Arena, where the Wizards and Capitals currently play, could host women's sports and other events. District officials have made a counterproposal aimed at keeping the men's teams.

The British government has apologized to the families of 97 Liverpool soccer fans who died after a stadium crush 34 years ago. The apology came Wednesday as it introduced a charter it said will sharply diminish the chances that others will endure the kinds of injustices they suffered. However, it refused to back calls from campaigners to legally require public bodies, including police, to tell the truth and proactively cooperate with official investigations and inquiries in cases of public disasters. The Hillsborough disaster happened on April 15, 1989. More than 2,000 Liverpool fans at Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield were allowed to flood into a standing-room section behind a goal with the stadium already nearly full.
