A Florida sheriff's deputy is being treated at the hospital after being ambushed and shot three times by a fleeing suspect during a burglary call.
The shooting happened Sunday night in unincorporated St. Petersburg.
The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said Cpl. Matt Aitken and K9 Taco responded to a report of a car burglary. The pair spotted a suspect near a church and began tracking him. Another police sergeant joined the search.
Investigators said as the deputies entered a fenced backyard and turned a corner, the suspect, Zion Bostick, opened fire, hitting Aitken three times. The suspect then fired three more times at Sgt. Jake Viano. The sergeant returned fire, killing Bostick.
Aitken is stable at the hospital. Sgt. Viano and K9 Taco were not hurt.
The St. Petersburg Police Department is leading the investigation.
At a news conference on Monday morning, investigators said Aitken underwent surgery for gun shot wounds to his neck, leg, and hand.
Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri says there is video of the shooting incident but it won't be released right away.
"People need to see what bad guys like this do to good cops who are just doing their job, trying to get a guy who is committing more crimes who, at 22 years old, is been charged with 34 felonies 22 misdemeanors and been arrested 18 times and, as a 17 year old, been in the state prison system and has got two guns on him and tried to execute a deputy sheriff."
Investigators said the suspect had two guns on him and a backpack of ammunition at the time of the shooting. Bostick skipped out on a court appearance and faced a warrant for his arrest and an additional five years in prison. He first went to state prison after being charged as an adult in a criminal case. The sheriff's office said once released he committed more crimes and went back to prison for a second time. He was released one year ago Sunday. He reportedly told his mom that he had no plans on going back.
