Greenville's election filing period closed at noon Thursday, giving voters their first clear glimpse at the field of candidates seeking to represent the city.

For the first time since 2007, incumbent Republican Mayor Knox White will face opposition, including Michelle Shain, a Democrat, and fellow Republican Joe Farmer. One at-large seat held by Dorothy Dowe and a commissioner of public works seat held by Phillip Kilgore will also be contested.

John DeWorken is seeking uncontested re-election in City Council District 1, which includes the North Main neighborhood and Bob Jones University area, and Ken Gibson is running again in District 3, which includes neighborhoods like Nicholtown and Sterling.

City Council is composed of a mayor and six councilmembers, two elected at-large and four elected from their respective districts.
