5 fun things to do around Ann Arbor this weekend (March 31-April 2)

ANN ARBOR, MI -- There are plenty of ways to relax and have some fun in the Ann Arbor area this weekend.

Most notably, Ann Arbor’s annual Hash Bash is Saturday, April 1, bringing all kinds of opportunities to participate in a variety of activities.

But, if marijuana isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other events going on from Friday, March 31, to Sunday, April 2.

1. Celebrate Ann Arbor’s 52nd Hash Bash

Ann Arbor’s Hash Bash begins at high noon on Saturday, April 1, at the University of Michigan Diag. The annual event brings live music, speeches from cannabis activists, politicians and, of course, a smoke fest.

The Monroe Street Fair also coincides with Hash Bash, bringing festivities along nearby streets surrounding the Diag.

In honor of the event, there is a scavenger hunt that will take participants through marijuana dispensaries all across Ann Arbor to collect special discounts, pre-rolls, edibles and other products.

Money raised from the Hash Bash Treasure Hunt will benefit expungement efforts in Michigan. Participants can purchase maps for $40 and also receive a single-day ticket to the Hash Bash Cup, a vendor show occurring the same weekend.

Participating dispensaries include Apothecare, House of Evolution and Winewood Organics, among others. Vertex Coffee and Peace, Love, & Little Donuts will also be participating.

2. Get an early look at University of Michigan football

The Wolverines have an open spring practice Saturday, April 1, at The Big House.

The Maize and Blue spring game is free and open to the public. Warm-ups and drills start around 3 p.m. before the scrimmage.

Michigan Stadium gates 1, 2 and 10 on the east side will open at 2 p.m. Fans can expect some seating restrictions at sections 1 through 9 and 37 through 44.

3. Find all things fiber at this expo

Whether you’re looking for wool, alpaca, linen or cotton, you can find it from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 1, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 2, at the Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds, 5055 Ann Arbor Saline Road.

Admission to this annual expo is $4 for one day or $6 for two days and is cash only. Children 12 and younger are admitted free.

The event features all kinds of natural materials and fibers for sale along with items made using these products. A full list of spring vendors can be found here.

The event will also feature classes and workshops, including lessons on how to paint with wool, how to create a bunny out of felt and more. Classes and workshops cost additional money and can be found here.

4. Sip on a beer and try out some new board and card games

Join Bløm Meadworks for some new games from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, April 2.

Michigame Design Lab is a group of card and board game designers from Southeast Michigan creating games of their own for others to playtest. The group meets the first and third Sunday of each month at Bløm Meadworks, 100 South 4th Ave.

The free event will let participants try out all kinds of games and give Michigame Design Lab their feedback.

5. Start your garden with the help from the Ann Arbor District Library

Swap some seeds or just find some new additions to add to your garden from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 1, at the Ann Arbor District Library, 343 S. 5th Ave.

Those attending can drop off extra seeds they have harvested from their gardens or just grab some seeds they want to see grow, whether it’s flowers, vegetables, herbs or other plants. Participants are not required to bring seeds to the event.

The free event is in partnership with the Ypsilanti District Library, the Washtenaw Community College Bailey Library and the Matthaei Botanical Gardens.
