UK-based hydrogen fuel cell developer AFC Energy has launched its new ammonia cracker technology platform, a hydrogen generation solution that aims to unlock the value of ammonia as a hydrogen carrier fuel across Europe and Asia.

Having accelerated development of its cracking technology in response to a growth in ammonia imports contracted into Europe, AFC intends for its modular technology to help increase cracker capacity to meet the increase in imports.

According to the company, its new platform will help overcome challenges related to hydrogen generation and transport, in addition to paving the way for greater usage of green hydrogen in hard-to-abate industries that are seeking to decarbonise.

Ammonia cracking is the process of decomposing the gas over a catalyst to create nitrogen and hydrogen – a market for which AIM-listed AFC anticipates will be worth $150bn by 2030, before hitting $1.5 trillion in 2050.
