The Japan University of Economics on March 16 said it is allowing dozens of Ukrainian students studying Japanese to attend classes at its main Fukuoka Campus for one tuition-free year.

The university, headquartered in Dazaifu, Fukuoka Prefecture, is expected to welcome 70 students from Kyiv National Linguistic University in the capital of Ukraine by the end of March.

The two universities signed an agreement to exchange students in 2020.

Since then, the Japanese university has provided Japanese classes online for students in Kyiv, as well as training programs for Japanese language instructors in Ukraine.

Students at the two universities have built friendships through language exchanges and other activities.

In light of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Japanese university offered to accept students in Kyiv who wanted to flee to Japan. About 70 students learning Japanese culture and language expressed a desire to study in Japan.

The Japanese university also signed a student exchange agreement with Lviv Polytechnic National University in Ukraine.

On March 15, two exchange students from Kyiv National Linguistic University and one student from Lviv Polytechnic National University arrived in Japan to study at the Japan University of Economics.

Their trips had been planned last year, according to the university.
