What is First Extended Service?

First Extended Service is a car warranty company with four different vehicle service contract options. If your car has to undergo a repair for a component covered by your warranty, First Extended Service pays for the repair, minus a deductible. Typical deductibles range from $50 to $100.

First Extended Service cost

First Extended Service has no prices listed online. However, the average car warranty in the U.S. costs from $350 to $750 a year, so if you get a quote from First Extended Service, you can use this number as a benchmark. Compare First Extended Service’s Powertrain plan costs to the lower end of this average range and its Comprehensive plan costs to the higher end.

First Extended Service plans

First Extended Service has four car warranty plans. Certain details of the plans are customizable — you have some choice over the plan’s length of coverage and the deductible. The most basic plan is called Powertrain, while the Comprehensive plan offers the most coverage.

Powertrain plan
The Powertrain plan offers First Extended Service’s most basic coverage. It covers:
  • Special hybrid/electric vehicle components
  • Engine
  • Transmission
  • Front-wheel drive
  • Rear-wheel drive
Base plan
The Base plan is a step up in coverage. It includes everything in the Powertrain plan plus:
  • Steering
  • Front and rear suspension
  • Brakes
  • Seals and gaskets
  • Electrical
  • Air conditioning
High-tech plan
The High-tech plan is the company’s second-most comprehensive plan. It covers everything in the Base plan plus:
  • Specific high-tech items, such as anti-lock brake systems and power seat motors
  • Miscellaneous items like heated back glass, radiator, radiator fan and fuel tank
Comprehensive plan
True to its name, the Comprehensive plan covers the most components of any First Extended Service car warranty. In addition to everything in the High-Tech plan, the Comprehensive plan covers:
  • Convenience items like cigarette lighters, auxiliary power points and glove box lamps
  • Entertainment systems
  • Safety and security systems
  • Additional miscellaneous items, such as outside mirror remote adjuster

First Extended Service coverage

To maintain coverage under First Extended Service, you must perform routine maintenance as outlined in the contract. This includes recurring tasks that First Extended Service isn’t responsible for, such as oil changes.

For repairs covered by your plan, it's fine if the dealer that sold you the vehicle cannot fix the problem. Your program administrator can make a payment to another car repair facility.

Some car warranty companies limit the number of covered repairs or how many claims can be made. With First Extended Service, there isn’t a limit. Every plan with First Extended Service is transferable, and it offers coverage in all 50 U.S. states and Canada.

First Extended Service benefits

First Extended Service car warranties come with benefits in addition to coverage for car part breakdowns. These benefits include:

  • Rental reimbursement: If your car is in the shop and you need a rental, you can receive up to $35 a day for five days maximum.
  • Roadside assistance: Service is available for towing, flat tires, lockouts and dead batteries. You can also get roadside water, fluid, oil and fuel delivery. The company pays up to $100 for covered emergencies.
  • Travel interruption reimbursement: If a road trip is interrupted due to vehicle breakdown and you pay for unexpected food and lodging, First Extended Service can help. It provides up to $200 per day for five days to cover expenses. This only applies if you are 100 miles or more from home.

First Extended Service FAQ

What does First Extended Service cover?

First Extended Service coverage varies based on which of the four plans you choose. The most basic Powertrain plan covers just the engine, transmission, front-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive system and special hybrid and electric vehicle components. The Comprehensive plan covers just about everything besides what car insurance covers.

Where is First Extended Service available?

First Extended Service has coverage across all 50 U.S. states and Canada.

Can I transfer ownership of my First Extended Service car warranty?

Yes. If you sell your vehicle, you can transfer the warranty to a new owner so it stays with the same car.

Do we recommend First Extended Service?

First Extended Service offers four tiers of coverage to fit the needs of vehicle owners, but consumer reviews mention trouble getting First Extended Service to cover claims. This gives us pause in recommending them. It’s best to compare rates from several car warranty companies and find one with more positive consumer reviews, especially regarding the claims process.

It was just an okay experience, not spectacular. I was happy to pay the $100 deductible for the MAF, but then Star Nissan upsold me throttle bottle service which was supposed to be a complement to the Mass Air Flow; however, it was not covered by the warranty and cost me an additional $185.00 plus tax for a total of $310.00. Since they've done the work, my car vibrates a little. I am intimidated to go back to get my car serviced at that service center in the future.

I bought our vehicle pre-owned, and spent a lot on the extended warranty. It's my wife's car, and I want peace of mind. One pays quite a bit for the EW through dealer, they mark up for profit. I don't know what it costs through the actual company, but I'm sure less. 10k miles after our purchase, the engine needed replaced. That alone paid for warranty. And here recently had several issues, that totaled around $3k. Once again, the warranty came to rescue. No hassle, no argue, just a couple days of approval and they went to work. The inconvenience of dealing with the issues is the only negative in situation, but a loaner vehicle is available. I'm very thankful for this warranty company, and can very much say it's money well spent. I can think of nothing to improve on.

This May the engine in my wife's Jeep Cherokee suddenly started skipping which caused alarm lights to appear on the dash. The car had very low mileage for a 2017. It was towed to the Jeep dealer. The only issue I had with the process was the length of time it took for resolution. I’m not sure why that was. When it was determined that the engine would need to be replaced there was a little more delay in securing a replacement. Once the new engine was delivered things went smoothly and quickly. The car arrived at the dealer May 22 and left the dealership under its own power on August 9.

I am pleased with the resolution and my wife is very grateful to have her precious Jeep back. When we purchased this car I was concerned that with so much technology involved that something expensive was likely to break during the 36 month warranty period. I never guessed that it would be the engine. My expensive warranty turned out to have been a wise purchase.

As near as I can remember all my experiences for this claim were mostly positive. When I first called a tow was arranged and the next morning when it came the driver suggested he try and jump my car which he did and my auto started but he said the battery was bad and l should purchase a new one which I did at an auto supply store but they couldn't install it so I drove to a car repair garage and when they checked my battery said it was bad as was my alternator & suggested I not drive it with the new battery because of damaging it.

When I tried to start it my car would not start so a tow was arranged for the next AM to take it to the dealership. There l was taken care of and my new battery and alternator were installed. During this whole experience I received and made many phone calls to the insurance co. Everyone was very concerned about what was happening and explained what I should do next and kept me informed. Although not an experience I would wish on anybody, with the help of the people at the insurance co. I was able to get through it with my sanity intact. Thanks to all.

I was getting Shift to Park error code on my 2019 Chevy Blazer and the engine would not shut off. I had to back, pull forward numerous times, jiggle the shifting lever before I could get it to shut down. From the beginning the shifting lever never seemed tight. I researched this problem online and found where this has been a common problem on other chevy models from years before 2019. In many cases the dealerships were not honoring the extended warranties because GM didn't know what was causing the problem and would not issue recall on the problem. The buyer was stuck with a big repair bill in some cases multiple times.

California has a Lemon Law Act and many buyers were forced into litigation over this Shift to Park problem. I was very worried I was going to be one of those people, but thankfully it did not turn out like for me. I paid more than 50k for this vehicle and at this time it only has a little over 16000 miles on it. I'm a single widow, I purchased this vehicle for safety and dependability. In one incident I had to drive back home because I couldn't get it to shut down. I was about to call a tow truck for help, but finally it shut off. I called the dealership where I purchased the Blazer ASAP and I was very relieved to know that my extended warranty did in fact cover the repair and the deductible. Now my Blazer drives and feels so much better since it has been repaired and my confidence in Chevy has been restored at this time. I love my Blazer and I once again feel safe driving it.

I recently had the oil pump replaced on my 2017 Chevy Z71 Suburban. However the repairs were delayed, because your records showed a “gap” in my oil & filter servicing of the vehicle, and I was repeatedly asked to provide records of two oil changes, which were admittedly performed not at the local Chevy dealership. This in and of itself is not the issue. The issue was that just months earlier, you replaced my entire transmission, and I had already provided the records for the two oil changes.

Furnace: The furnace wouldn't heat, sail switch needed to be replaced. Very hard location to access the furnace. Insurance wouldn't pay for the extra time necessary, so I had to pay for it. Insurance should have a flexible hourly limit based on furnace location. Black cable replacement: no issues. 4 star rating overall. 5 stars for PC Mechanical service. 3 stars for Insurance not being flexible and covering the repair costs.

Horrible communication. Inspection delays- no communication with outside party handling the inspections. Car has been at the dealership multiple times with the same issues. The dealer and the warranty company make it very difficult to have a timely diagnosis and repair. We love this car and is our only transportation for our kids but moving forward may NOT purchase another KIA. Reach out to me for more information.

Was totally unaware of any issues that technicians discovered during an annual inspection. Service rep came out and explained what they found, and that it had already been run through the claims process and all was good to go for repair. Hardly even realized any real delay in the service, so the turnaround time with the claim must have been extremely fast.

The dealer who sold me the vehicle said that it was not covered under warranty. I called your customer service who informed me that it should be covered and a claim from the dealer was never submitted and denied. I went back to the dealer with this information and was able to get almost all the work done under the warranty I purchased.
