In Oakland, a recent surge of criminal activity has been linked to juveniles. The Oakland Police Department arrested nine youngsters — three girls and six boys — in connection with 35 robberies across the city, including the town of Piedmont. The arrests followed a week in which Oakland experienced 100 robberies, including carjackings and shootings. Interim Oakland Police Chief Darren Allison and Interim Chief of Violence Prevention Kentrell Killens emphasize the importance of restorative justice and crime prevention programs to curb juvenile crime and provide support for young offenders to turn their lives around.
