NJ Coronavirus Updates: Here's What You Need To Know

NEW JERSEY – Developments in the new coronavirus outbreak continue to unfold rapidly in New Jersey now that the number of cases has risen to 368,016, and 15,485 confirmed deaths have been reported. Patch will be running regular updates as more information is released, and lists of towns and counties and their numbers of cases and fatalities are below.

Gov. Phil Murphy, who will next speak to the public at 1 p.m. on. Monday, announced on Sunday that New Jersey has 6,046 additional coronavirus cases – the highest daily case total in the state's history – and 16 more deaths. The Garden State's previous highest daily tally came on Thursday, when 5,673 more cases were revealed.

Nine of New Jersey's 21 counties are in the red zone when it comes to the severity of the COVID-19 outbreak, the White House Coronavirus Task Force said in a recent report. Red zones have more than 100 new cases per 100,000 residents and a diagnostic test positivity result of above 10 percent. Read more: 9 NJ Counties In Red Zone: White House Coronavirus Task Force

Murphy has provided a new timeline on New Jersey's vaccine distribution while also saying the Garden State is streamlining the process. Read more: NJ Streamlines Vaccine Distribution, Provides New Timing Details

Murphy announced this past week that all indoor high school and youth sports will be banned until Jan. 2 and he is drastically limiting the maximum number of people who can gather outside to 25. Read more: Gov. Murphy Limits Outdoor Gatherings To 25; Halts Indoor Sports

How It Spreads

The virus that causes COVID-19 is spreading from person-to-person. Someone who is actively sick with COVID-19 can spread the illness to others. That is why CDC recommends that these patients be isolated either in the hospital or at home (depending on how sick they are) until they are better and no longer pose a risk of infecting others.

There is currently no vaccine for COVID-19.

While the best way to prevent illness is to avoid virus exposure, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention always recommends taking preventive actions to contain the spread of viruses. This includes:

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.

  • Stay home when you are sick.

  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.

  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipes.

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
