SCHWENKSVILLE  — Widely known as “America’s pastime,” baseball has been a part of American history since the early 1800s. Early versions of baseball were a mash-up of different stick and ball games (like cricket) that have been around for centuries.

The first official game of baseball took place in 1846 and the sport has continued to grow in popularity and national significance ever since. For the majority of the 1800s, baseball was an amateur game played slightly differently than how we play today. The old rules and traditions of early baseball are kept alive by the Athletic Base Ball Club of Philadelphia.

On Saturday, June 24, from 1 to 3 p.m., Pennypacker Mills will host a vintage baseball game.

The Athletic Base Ball Club of Philadelphia will be playing against Brandywine at this free event. The players will wear authentic-style team uniforms, abide by 1860s rules and field layout, and use handmade balls and bats. Bring a blanket or chair to sit on. The Pennypacker Mills mansion will be open for tours during this event.

Pennypacker Mills is operated by Montgomery County’s Division of Parks, Trails & Historic Sites. The site is open year-round for free guided tours, seasonal events, craft workshops, special presentations, education programs, the StoryWalk and changing exhibits. It is located at 5 Haldeman Road in Perkiomen Township.
