This means that they will shield your skin from both UVA and UVB rays, ensuring maximum protection against the sun. UVA rays prematurely age your skin, while UVB rays cause sunburn, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD).

✔️ Look for a 9-11% concentration of zinc oxide. When it comes to the concentration of zinc oxide in the formula, Dr. Garshick says it’s generally best to use ones that have at least 9-11%. Dr. Rodney recommends looking for ones that contain at least 10% zinc oxide. “This will provide adequate protection against the sun’s harmful rays,” she says.

While there are many benefits to using zinc oxide sunscreens, there are also some potential downsides to consider, says Dr. Rodney. “Zinc oxide sunscreens can be thicker and more difficult to blend into the skin than chemical sunscreens,” she notes. “They may also leave a white cast on the skin, which can be particularly noticeable on darker skin tones.”

Indeed, mineral sunscreens are commonly known to leave behind a white cast—but there are many newer formulations today that absorb more easily and won’t leave any white residue, says Dr. Garshick.

How should you apply zinc oxide sunscreen?

“When applying a zinc-based sunscreen, you need to make sure you’re applying enough to get the label protection on the bottle,” says Dr. Zeichner. He recommends applying a quarter size amount for the full face, and applying it from the center of your face and rubbing it outwards to the border, making sure to include the skin around the hairline.
