The flagship of Montana’s public university system, the University of Montana is a midsize research university in the lively college town of Missoula. UM offers more than 70 undergraduate programs, including a large number of programs at the W.A. Franke College of Forestry and Conservation. It’s one of few institutions to offer programs in Central and Southwest Asian studies. There are a large number of research centers on campus, including the recently-established American Indian Research and Policy Institute. In 2020
the school received a $10 million grant to study the health impact of climate change and its effects. The Montana Grizzlies play in the NCAA D1 Big Sky Conference. Notable alumni include Jeannette Rankin, the first woman elected to Congress, actor JK Simmons and influential US Senator Mike Mansfield.
