Driver of stolen vehicle damages multiple Seattle police cars trying to escape law enforcement

Both the driver and the passenger were taken into custody.

SEATTLE — Several Seattle Police Department patrol vehicles were damaged Monday morning after two people in a stolen vehicle attempted to evade officers.

SPD confirms officers were conducting a welfare check on two individuals inside a vehicle in a parking lot. Upon attempting to contact the subjects, they tried to drive off and hit several patrol vehicles and other objects in an alley.

After driving for about a block, the subjects collided with a telephone pole. Officers following on foot took both of the vehicle's occupants into custody after they exited the vehicle and tried to flee on foot.

Susan Goubert was homesick when she heard the car strike the telephone pole.

"It felt like somebody had come into the side of my house, and I was like, oh that's weird, and looked out the window and saw the pole had been hit," Goubert said.

Goubert has lived on the block near Harrison Street and 17th Avenue East for 20 years. Ring camera video captured the vehicle striking the pole on her street. The crash was a rude awakening for many in the neighborhood.

"Everybody came outside in their morning best," Goubert said. "And it was all of the neighbors just talking about how unusual this was for us."

No officers were injured when the suspect rammed the police cars. Goubert said neither she nor any of her neighbors have seen anything like this incident before on their street.

"We've seen lots of interesting things, but this is absolutely a prize winner for being the most destruction I've seen," Goubert said.
