Doughnut or Donut?
It's a decades-old debate for the lovers of these sweet treats.
Kenny Sith, owner of the Donut Palace in Lebanon, said donut is simply shorthand for some.
"I guess it just looked better to them," he said. "I don’t think there is a big reason (for the donut spelling.)"
The word doughnut, as well as the much simpler version — donut — dates back hundreds of years to the earliest days of people enjoying the fried goodness. But which spelling is correct?
Both are.
The original spelling first appeared in the 18th century. While popular eateries like Dunkin' popularized the phonetic spelling of the word, donut has appeared in texts since the mid-20th century.
And when should each spelling be used?
The AP stylebook, the style and usage guide for American English grammar, prefers doughnut. However, Miriam-Webster doesn't have a preference.
