Elliot Lake’s Jo Anne Matheson, representing FireSmart Canada, was helping to spread the word about the dangers of forest fires. With forest fires across the country destroying timber land and homes, Matheson says they can show people how to lessen the risk of having wildfires destroying their homes. The Elliot Lake and Area Rod and Gun Club was asking people to sign a petition to have the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry reverse its decision to cease its support of the Elliot Lake walleye rearing pond known as the Leo Barbosa Walleye Pond. It was started in 1984 by the North Shore Fisheries. Many walleye over the years stocked in area lakes came from the pond.
