Tina Turner dead: ‘The Best’ singer and rock ‘n’ roll legend dies at 83

Singer Tina Turner, who was known as the “Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” has died at the age of 83, according to a spokesperson.

The spokesperson said Turner died at her home in Switzerland on Wednesday, following a long illness, per Sky News.

“Tina Turner, the ‘Queen of Rock’n Roll’ has died peacefully today at the age of 83 after a long illness in her home in Kusnacht near Zurich, Switzerland. With her, the world loses a music legend and a role model,” the spokesperson said, per the outlet.

The artist best known for hit songs “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” “The Best,” and “Typical Male,” along with duets with Ike Turner on the track “River Deep – Mountain High” and a cover of “Proud Mary.”

Turner was honored at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2021 and at the Kennedy Center Honors in 2005. She was also nominated for 25 Grammys during her illustrious career, winning 12 total Grammys, both competitive and non-competitive.

Born Anna Mae Bullock in Tennessee in 1939, Turner got her singing career started with Ike Turner, who she had a 20-year relationship with. Tina Turner later described her relationship with Ike Turner as abusive. She revealed in her memoir I, Tina that he beat her and abused her progressively until she finally left him in 1976. After leaving the relationship, she saw continued success as a solo artist.

Her life and marriage to Ike Turner was the subject of the 1993 film What’s Love Got to Do with It, which was nominated for two Oscars. Turner’s life also inspired the Broadway musical Tina: The Tina Turner Musical.

Turner released 10 studio albums during her career, including 1984’s Private Dancer, with her final studio album being released in 1999.

She also appeared in several films, including the 1975 movie Tommy and the 1985 movie Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.
