Terra Becker is on the ballot for the Mountainburg school board. But since she's unopposed in the race, she will cast the only vote in the election, our content partner 40/29 News reported.
"School board elections work a little bit differently than most elections in Arkansas," Shantell McGraw said. "A couple of sessions ago they (legislators) passed a law where you can do an election by candidate."
McGraw is the assistant director of elections with the Arkansas Secretary of State's office. She told 40/29 News that, for the most part, local school boards decide how school elections will be handled in their districts.
According to Crawford County Election Commission Chairman Mike Moxley, since Becker's race is classified as an "Election by Candidate," Becker is the only person authorized to vote in the race.
Becker told 40/29 News she plans on casting her lone ballot in the race on Wednesday morning.
When asked what would happen if Becker failed to vote for herself, McGraw said, "That's a good question. So to my knowledge, the law does not address the candidate not coming in and voting for themselves. So I think that would be something where we would need to probably seek legal council to see what we would do with that situation."
