Jewel will sing the national anthem at the 2023 Indianapolis 500

Multiplatinum singer Jewel will perform the national anthem before the 2023 Indy 500, Indianapolis Motor Speedway announced Friday.

The songwriter, who grew up in Alaska, found fame with 1995 album "Pieces of You" and singles that include "Who Will Save Your Soul" and "Foolish Games."

Jewel has since released other popular albums, including 2022's "Freewheelin' Woman," collaborated with Dolly Parton and taken a turn in film and TV, including in Ang Lee's "Ride With the Devil" and on "Nashville Star." Jewel's poetic lyrics and the wide range and texture of her voice have earned her multiple Grammy nominations and a bevy of other music awards.

Her performance in Indianapolis coincides with May as Mental Health Awareness Month, a cause that Jewel has long supported. She's brought mental health programs to at-risk youth and corporations with the Inspiring Children Foundation and Jewel Inc., and she aims to broaden mental health support's accessibility as co-founder and chief strategy officer of virtual reality platform Innerworld.

Live coverage of the May 28 race will begin at 11 a.m. on NBC, and the green flag will drop at 12:45 p.m.
