Holidays are setting Seattle weather records this spring and in a classic case of weather whiplash, western Washington goes from record wet to record warm within a few days.

Cinco de Mayo last Friday was the coldest and wettest on record. Mother's Day on Sunday will be the complete opposite as temperatures in western Washington are expected to get warmer leading into the weekend.

By Sunday, temperatures will be hot with highs well into the 80s and near 90 degrees for some areas of western Washington, according to KOMO News Meteorologist Kristin Clark. The National Weather Service said temperatures are expected to peak on Sunday and Monday.

Typically, Seattle doesn't hit 90 degrees until July 3. The earliest ever 90-degree day was May 17, 2008.

Highs on Wednesday are forecast near 70 degrees. As the lowlands bask in sunny and seasonably warm conditions, the Cascades may see stray thundershowers Wednesday afternoon.

Thursday will be quieter across the higher terrain as dry high pressure begins to fortify itself over the Pacific Northwest.

Then on Friday, the flow flips offshore as this high pressure rapidly strengthens over Alberta, Canada, a location, unfortunately, with 88 active wildfires. While the smoke from these fires stays well away from Washington state, Clark said we won't be able to escape the heat.

The warming breeze down the Cascade mountains will give temperatures an extra boost well into the 70s Friday afternoon. By Saturday, Seattle should reach 80 degrees for the second time this year.

Clark said Mother's Day is expected to be downright hot by PNW standards. High temperatures under a bright blue sky will soar well into the 80s from Puget Sound to the coastal beaches, even a few low 90s will be spotted along the Chehalis River Valley.

The heat will be subdued across the San Juan Islands, surrounded by cool water and in the low 70s this holiday weekend.

Monday may turn out to be an interesting day weather-wise in western Washington. While conditions still remain uncomfortably hot, thunderstorms may erupt to bring a booming end to this mid-May heat wave.
