Thunderstorms arrived in western Washington Monday afternoon and overnight Tuesday creating a beautiful sight for local photographers.
Lightning struck 1,300 times in western Washington between 1 p.m. on Monday, May 15 and 2 a.m. on Tuesday, May 16, according to The National Weather Service Seattle (NWS Seattle).
Thunderstorms were brewing with the recent hot and muggy weather. However, because of it, temperatures lowered drastically, said KOMO News Meteorologist Kristin Clark. When a thunderstorm happens, rain-cooled air rushes out underneath a thunderboomer. For example, one lightning storm over Graham cooled the air by 15 degrees in a matter of minutes.
However, the cooling thunderstorms will be confined to the Cascade Mountains and adjacent Columbia Basin for the rest of the week keeping it toasty in the city!
