Shanksville outlasts Meyersdale in five sets

MEYERSDALE — Shanksville triumphed over Meyersdale in five sets in girls volleyball on Tuesday by the scores of 21-25, 27-25, 25-19, 20-25 and 15-4.

Rylee Snyder had seven kills for the Vikings, while Josie Snyder had five.

Liz Salsgiver dished out 17 assists.

For Meyersdale, Lindsey Robertson totaled 15 kills, and Jaden Blough had 12 kills and 12 blocks.

Jaden Cerreta had 20 assists, Lakyn Lear added five kills and Tara Knopsnyder totaled 13 digs for the Red Raiders.

Shanksville improves to 10-6, while Meyersdale falls to 8-9 and will travel to Salisbury on Thursday.

Berlin 3, Rockwood 0

BERLIN — Berlin defeated Rockwood in three sets in girls volleyball on Tuesday by the scores of 25-6, 25-13 and 25-8.

Kiera Booth had 18 kills and five aces to lead the Mountaineers.

Grace Dorcon added 13 kills and five aces.

Lexi Yanosky dished out 18 assists.

Carlyn Hay totaled 11 assists and five aces.

Berlin improves to 16-0 and will host Shanksville on Thursday.

The Mountaineers won the junior varsity match 25-20 and 25-19.

CT 3, Ferndale 0

DAVIDSVILLE — Conemaugh Township swept Ferndale 3-0 in girls volleyball on Tuesday. Set scores were 25-15, 25-9 and 25-5.

Jenny Durica led the Indians with 13 kills, 15 digs and three aces. Mary Swank nearly matched with 13 kills, 13 digs and six aces.

Maciah Holsopple and Hannah Swank each totaled seven kills. Chloe Bidelman added 10 digs and Madison Showalter dished out 32 assists.

Conemaugh Township improves to 12-3 and will travel to Windber on Thursday.

Ferndale won the junior varsity match 25-22 and 26-24.

NS 3, Windber 0

BOSWELL — North Star swept Windber 3-0 in girls volleyball on Tuesday by the scores of 25-17, 25-19 and 25-10.

Syd Ashbrook led the Cougars with 12 kills and nine service points. Sierra Walker had seven kills and eight digs, while Abby Retassie had 13 service points and eight kills. Cara Augustine totaled 19 assists.

For Windber, Amanda Cominsky had seven kills and Eryn Marsh totaled eight assists.

North Star improves to 16-1 and will travel to Conemaugh Valley on Thursday.

CC 3, Somerset 1

EBENSBURG — Somerset was defeated by Central Cambria 3-1 in girls volleyball on Tuesday.

Set scores were 25-18, 16-25, 15-25 and 14-25.

Shawna Walker led the Golden Eagles with nine kills, while Sofia Rush tallied eight. Anna Lane totaled 29 assists and Ally Weimer had eight digs.

Somerset falls to 8-8 and will travel to Cambria Heights on Thursday.

Central Cambria won the junior varsity match 19-25, 25-19 and 14-16.

Shade 3, Salisbury 0

CAIRNBROOK — Shade coasted past Salisbury 3-0 in girls volleyball on Tuesday.

Set scores were 25-12, 25-9 and 26-24.

Shade won the junior varsity match 25-4 and 25-14.

Windber 8, JCS 0

WINDBER — Windber cruised by Johnstown Christian 8-0 in girls soccer on Tuesday behind a combined shutout in goal from Lexi James and Karli Hanik.

Natalie Buza led the Ramblers (15-2) with four goals and an assist. Nikki Kaiser scored two goals and added two assists.

Anna Steinbeck had a goal and two assists. Caroline McClain tallied a goal and an assist, and Halle Bowden chipped in an assist.

Berlin 3, LV 0

BERLIN — Berlin defeated Ligonier Valley 3-0 in girls soccer on Tuesday behind a shutout in goal from Hartley VanGilder.

Kara McKenzie and Rayne Stoltzfus each tallied a goal and an assist for the Mountaineers. Adrianna Guindon added a goal and Grace Sechler had an assist.

Maggie Walker, Adrianna Guindon, Alivia Coughenour and Morgan Twombly each had strong games defensively.

Somerset 2, CR 0

SOMERSET — Somerset handled Chestnut Ridge 2-0 in boys soccer on Tuesday behind a shutout in goal from Ian Lasure, who gave the team its 11th shutout of the season.

Quinn Egal and Jose Davalos each scored a goal for the Golden Eagles (14-3). Isaac Hoyman added an assist.

“Playing two tough games back to back was a challenge,” Somerset head coach Mark Wassilchalk said. “This game was a real character builder for us. While we carried the majority of play and saw a number of nice chances at goal, we had some problems finishing the opportunities that we generated.

“A lot of credit again goes to our defensive core of Elijah Armstrong, Nate Barnhart, Justin Steele, Caleb Antram, and Caleb Chabol. These guys have played very consistently in front of keeper Ian Lasure all season.”

Chestnut Ridge won the junior varsity game 2-0.

PIAA regional golf

BLAIRSVILLE — Rockwood’s Vileska Gelpi and Braxton Judy and Conemaugh Township’s Grace Thomas competed in the PIAA Western Regional golf tournament at Tom’s Run Golf Course at Chestnut Ridge Golf Resort on Tuesday.

Gelpi shot an 83 to finish eighth in the girls division, and also will advance to the PIAA State tournament at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York on Monday.

Judy finished with an 87, missing the cut to advance by eight strokes. Thomas totaled a 92, just missing the advancing score by four shots.
