Pioneer Day staking claim on Elizabeth Saturday
ELIZABETH — The 18th annual Wirt County Pioneer Day will be held Oct. 2 in Elizabeth.
The Elizabeth Beauchamp Chapter Daughters of American Pioneers will have displays about Wirt County history. Vendors can set up 6 a.m.
The opening ceremony is 9 a.m. in the stage area. The 2021 Middle School Pioneer Day Essay winner will be announced. The winner will receive $100 cash prize, a plaque and will read their essay to the crowd.
The Wirt County 17th Va. Calvary will present a memorial tribute to honor Civil War re-enactors who have lost their lives this past year. Names will be read and the memorial ends with a gun salute.
Demonstrators will include basket making, apple butter, and blacksmithing. Funnel cakes, baked potatoes, kettle corn, beans, corn bread, ice cream, hot dogs and cotton candy will be for sale.
The Johnny Staats Project takes stage at noon. Lawn chairs are recommended.
Actors with the Mountain Monsters TV show will be on the museum lawn. Rocky Point Carriage Rides will provide buggy rides on Court Street.
Thomas Entertainment carnival games will be on the museum lawn. A craft table will provide entertainment for the kids and a dunking booth will be available.
At 3 p.m. the Civil War Union and Confederate troops will arrive on Court Street for a skirmish on Robert’s lot. The North and South will engage in a mock battle with muskets firing and cannons firing.
