Is there school tomorrow? Here's what Mississippi schools are closed ahead of Hurricane Sally

Schools in Mississippi are closing or holding virtual classes Tuesday ahead of Hurricane Sally, which is expected to be a Category 2 storm by the time it makes landfall.

Here are the latest school closings:

Forrest County

The Hattiesburg Public School District will be participating in 100% virtual learning for all students on Tuesday. No decision has been made on whether students will attend in-person classes on Wednesday.

Sacred Heart Catholic School has also announced that all classes will be held virtually on Tuesday. High school students are to attend classes through Google Classroom at their regularly scheduled times and will be on a B-Day schedule. All extracurricular activities, starting from Monday at 6 p.m. through Wednesday, have been cancelled.

George County

George County School District is canceling school and all extracurricular activities Tuesday. Additional information about the status of schools for Wednesday will be posted on the district's website and social media pages later.

Hancock County

Bay Waveland School District canceled classes on Tuesday. The school board meeting has been moved to Thursday. Concerns and inquires can be emailed to questions@bwsd.org.

Hancock County School District is closed on Tuesday.

Holy Trinity Catholic School, St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School, and Our Lady Academy will be closed on Wednesday.

Harrison County

Biloxi School District scheduled distance learning for Tuesday and possibly Wednesday. 

Gulfport School District will be closed Tuesday. 

Long Beach School District is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday.

St. Stanislaus College and Holy Trinity Catholic School, both in Bay St. Louis, are cancelling classes Wednesday. 

Jackson County

Moss Point School District has closed school on Tuesday. 

Jackson County School District is canceling classes Tuesday and Wednesday.

The following schools have also cancelled all Wednesday classes:

  • St. Alphosus Catholic School
  • Resurrection Catholic School
  • Sacred Heart Catholic Elementary
  • Our Lady of Fatima Elementary and Preschool
  • Patrick Catholic High School
  • St. Vincent De Paul Catholic School

Pearl River County

St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School is closed on Wednesday.

Stone County

Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College shifted classes to a virtual format until the threat from Sally has subsided. Dorms and dining areas will remain open. 

University of Southern Mississippi

In-person operations on the Gulf Coast, including the Gulf Park campus, Gulf Coast Research Lab, Marine Research Center and Stennis Space Center will be closed Tuesday. Classes scheduled at Gulf Coast locations will not meet. Hattiesburg in-person operations are expected to proceed as scheduled on Tuesday morning.

Jones College

Jones College campus operations will close at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, September 15. All services and offices will shift to a virtual, work-from-home format Wednesday, September 15, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Normal campus operations will resume Thursday, September 17. Classes will remain online through Wednesday, September 16. The dorms and dining hall on the main campus in Ellisville will remain open.

William Carey University

University officials announced that classes on Monday will be cancelled at both the Tradition and the Hattiesburg campuses. Offices at both locations will also be closed. The Baton Rouge campus is not affected.

Classes will resume at the Hattiesburg campus Wednesday, but the Tradition campus will remain closed, according to an announcement made Tuesday.
