All summer performances of the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival have been canceled because of the coronavirus, organizers announced Monday.

The festival, a summer tradition at DeSales University in Upper Saucon Township, produces a season of Shakespeare and other classics, musical theater and children’s theater. It’s typically home to more than 200 artists from around the country, including winners and nominees of Tony, Obie, Emmy, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, Jefferson, and Barrymore awards. The festival also draws nearly 50,000 patrons from all over the country.

This would have been the 29th season of the festival — eight productions were planned between late May and end of July.

“It is with a heavy heart that we have made the decision to cancel our performances this summer. We take this action for the safety and well-being of our artists, staff, volunteers, and patrons,” a statement on the festival’s website reads.

“We’ll be back in full force for summer 2021, which we hope will include the same extraordinary plays,” he said. “We’ll look forward to gathering together next season so that our audience may again be renewed and refreshed by the artistry they so enjoy.”

For those who have tickets, the box office staff will be in touch in the coming weeks to discuss several options.
