HANCOCK — The Ryan Street Community Garden recently received a needed addition to their growing garden through collaboration with the Copper Country ISD Career & Technical Education programs.

CTE Construction Technology students built a counter out of treated wood, then mounted a sink with water lines, while the CTE Welding/Manufacturing students designed and fabricated a custom metal grate for the counter to expand its uses.

“The students designed and built a quality product out of pressure treated material that will stand up to the harsh UP elements and serve the community garden extremely well for a long time,” said Mike Randell, CTE Construction Technology instructor. “I am always impressed by how passionate the CTE students are about projects like this which serve the community.”

The craftsmanship and ingenuity of the students far exceeded what the garden committee originally anticipated doing.

“The garden committee talked about putting in a plastic wash tub, but this is so much nicer” Ryan Street Community volunteer and gardener, Carrie Flaspohler said. “The CTE instructors were so positive about what they could create and this is just great.

“It is always great to have the community youth contribute to the garden and get young people involved in gardening. We are extremely grateful for everyone’s efforts in this project.”

Flaspohler encouraged people to visit their blog at http://ryanstreetgarden.blogspot.com/ to learn more about the garden and information on getting involved.
