Arizona firefighter was crushed by engine. Here's what happened and how he's doing

Cody Jordan, a Gila Bend firefighter paramedic, was recovering from critical injuries he suffered on Friday while working underneath the cab of a fire engine, according to a Gila Bend Fire Department media briefing on Monday.

"We’re asking for your prayers and continued support for our firefighter that is fighting for his life," the media briefing said.

On Friday around 4 p.m., Jordan was working underneath the cab of a fire engine at a Gila Bend fire station when the cab gave way and trapped him underneath, according to fire officials.

Firefighters on shift were able to pull Jordan from underneath the cab and begin life-saving interventions, according to officials. Jordan was taken to a level 1 trauma center, Abrazo West in Goodyear, in critical condition, officials said.

Jordan was stabilized by the hospital team in the emergency department, according to the media brief. Officials said he is now in stable condition in the ICU and has undergone surgeries to stabilize his chest which was fractured in multiple places. Officials said Jordan is expected to have more surgeries in the coming weeks.

The media briefing said Jordan's wife, Lisa, was by his side and she expressed her sincere thanks to all of the fire departments who have reached out to her family.

A GoFundMe was set up for Jordan by DJ Silvia.

"After graduating top of his class at Mesa Community College, Cody began his career as a paramedic in 2023 immediately earning a full-time position for Gila Bend Fire Department," the GoFundMe page stated. "Being a paramedic is truly a passion for Cody, and his natural ability and brilliance at his craft sets him apart from most. He absolutely loves his job and being able to help others. Cody takes great pride in his work and all that he has already accomplished. Cody is constantly pushing himself to progress in his career which was evident by his recent graduation of the fire academy. You would be hard-pressed to find a more positive, active, energetic, hardworking, caring, genuine all-around good person than Cody.

"While his prognosis is uncertain, his medical bills are piling up. He is the sole provider to his household and his family needs assistance going forward. We humbly ask all of you for any and all help that you feel you can give. Please keep Cody and his family in your prayers."

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office started an investigation and determined no criminal investigation will be opened, according to the media briefing.
