Shirley Ann Willett OBITUARY

Shirley Ann Willett, age 80, of Brownsville, Tennessee, passed away on January 28, 2024, in Southfield, Michigan. Shirley was born on July 14, 1943, in Brownsville, Tennessee. She was a very hard worker who dedicated 10 years of her life as a teacher with the Pontiac School System, followed by another 35 years with the Detroit Public School System. Shirley had a passion for art and enjoyed decorating her home with beautiful artwork. She also loved landscaping her yard and the yards of her family members with vibrant flowers every summer. Shirley’s artistic endeavors led her to start an art business in the 80’s called Shirley’s Art Collection,which specialized in African art. Her collection of African art continued to grow throughout her life. In her educational journey, Shirley attended Jefferson Junior High School in Pontiac, Michigan, and graduated from Pontiac Central High School. She furthered her education at Tennessee State University, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education. Shortly thereafter, she received a fellowship to Oakland University,where she obtained a Master of Arts in Teaching. Shirley is survived by her son, Brian Willett, her brother, Carl Willett Sr., her nephews, Craig Willett, Carl Willett Jr., Jerrod Willett, Cory Green, and Devon Williams, and her niece, LaCarla Lawrence. She was preceded in death by her mother, Eva Blanche Polk Willett, her father, Decatur Willett, and her sister, Phyllis Willett. In accordance with Shirley’s wishes, there will be no services or viewing. Wright Museum of African American History at thewright.org. The Cobbs Funeral Home in Pontiac, Michigan, is assisting the family with the arrangements.
