Newspaper Headlines: FG to hold talks with Ghana over protection of undersea cables

Reactions to the killing of 16 army personnel at Okuoma community, in the Bomadi LGA of Delta state, permeate the front pages of Nigerian dailies. 

The Punch reports that President Bola Tinubu and the senate have ordered the military to apprehend the killers of 16 Nigerian army personnel who were on a peace mission to the Okuoma community in the Ughelli South LGA of Delta state. The newspaper says the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) have commenced a nationwide strike today to protest withheld salaries.

Daily Trust reports that Nigerians are angry over the allegations that the 2024 budget was padded by the national assembly. The newspaper says at least eight directors at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) may be served early retirement letters from the apex bank this week.

The Nation says the federal government is seeking to raise N450 billion from the investing public in a new debt issuance aimed at bridging the government’s deficit. The newspaper says Lagos will explore all avenues to revisit the issue of the 37 local council development areas (LCDAs) in the ongoing constitutional review process, with a view to legalising them. 

THISDAY reports that the federal government is expected to raise the value added tax (VAT) to 15 percent from the current 7.5 percent by 2027, to enable it fund its fiscal deficit and debt service obligations. The newspaper says Vice-President Kashim Shettima has urged Nigerians to be patient with the Tinubu administration.
