Shawnee County jail offers behavioral classes for inmates
TOPEKA (KSNT) – A new honors class is being offered to inmates at the Shawnee County Department of Corrections.
The jail is in week four of the new 12-week inmate honor module. Its a program that provides structured behavior modification, with programs like behavioral health, life skills, faith-based programs, module sanitation assignments, cognitive behavior programs and peer support.
According to program staff, 120 inmates showed interest in the program, but only 16 were selected to take part.

“One inmate said, ‘That explained, most treatment programs focus on one part of a program like drugs or mental health. But our programs attack all areas and aspects,'” Angela McHardie, Shawnee County Jail said. “So they just are really thankful to our team and our volunteers.”
Right now, the program is only available for male inmates, but the jail is looking to expand the program to women.
