COVINGTON, Tenn. — High winds are possibly to blame for a building collapsing in Covington, Tennessee on Monday.

The building was located on North Main Street and East Spring Street. It was once a popular night spot.

Officers say the building was empty for over ten years and scheduled to be demolished under a Blight Eradication Grant. No one was reported injured.

Police closed the roadway in that area for a period of time while crews worked to clear the scene. Although the site have been cleared of rubble, police ask to stay clear of the debris until it is completely removed.

A drone was also launched to assist in surveillance of the site.

Michael Adams lives around the corner from the building and says he heard a big boom.

“I didn’t think nothin’ of it,” Adams said. “And I seen some police cars and fire trucks and ambulance out here so I walk down the sidewalk not far from it and this big building had collapsed.”

“There had been some things we had seen, outward signs that this building needed to come down but this wasn’t planned,” said Richard Griggs, Covington Fire Department Chief.

This building originally opened back in the late ’40s as a grocery store. It then became the Tropical Isle Club and the Main Event disco.

Though a pile of rubble today, the building holds memories for many locals.

“I used to come up town when I was a little boy. The building was sitting here and I’m going on 60 something so the building got to be 75, 100 years old,” said Frank Smith of Covington.

Smith says when old enough, he frequented the popular club and so did many from the area.

“They had fun and danced,” he said. “They had fun and got down to the boogy, they danced. That was just the way it was back then.”

He also admits that if the wind indeed brought it down, it was probably for a good reason.

“I wasn’t doing nothing but sitting here so they needed to clean it up anyway,” Smith said. “That was for the best. This spot could be used for something else.”
