Retail Sportsbooks open in Virginia

There are currently no retail sportsbooks open in Virginia, with the Old Dominion not currently having any casino locations for one to open in.

There are plans for this to change, though.

Virginia is expected to open four casino locations that could play home to retail sportsbooks, while there are already laws in the books for any new major sports stadium to have a physical sportsbook inside.

Latest Virginia Sports Betting News

Virginia legalized sports betting in January 2021, however, due to the lack of physical casino locations in Old Dominion there are no retail locations as of yet. This means most of the recent developments have been in focused on approving casino locations that could hold sportsbooks.

So far four casinos are under construction in Virginia, with locations planned in Bristol, Danville, Norfolk, and Portsmouth. However, state capital Richmond rejected building a casino in city limits when the motion was put to a referendum in November 2020.

The massive popularity of online sports betting in Virginia will surely soon translate to more retail locations opening up. In December, Virginia because the fastest market to reach $2bn in handle, with the month alone handling a record-breaking $426.6m in online sports bets.

The history of Virginia Sports Betting

As with many states, Virginia first began to explore legalizing sports betting when the Supreme Court struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) in 2018. This led to Virginia passing a study bill in 2019 that would look to see whether the state should legalize sports betting.

After this study showed significant revenue for potential, a large amount of legislation was produced in order to swiftly legalize online sports betting. A compromise bill was eventually signed into law by Governor Ralph Northam in April 2020.

There are currently licenses for 12 online-only sportsbooks, with additional ones for online sportsbooks that partner with casinos or professional sporting organizations. This could bring the total number of legal online sportsbooks in Virginia to over 18.

Virginia Sports Teams to bet on

Virginia does not have any professional sports teams of its own, and it is not currently legal to bet on in-state college sports. However, this does not mean that there aren’t local options available for Virginians.

The Washington Commanders were the first professional sports team to partner with a sportsbook, having joined forces with FanDuel in January 2021. With rumors of a move south of the Potomac for the Commanders swirling, we look at what other options there are for betting on Washington-based sports teams.

Washington Commanders

The Washington Commanders are not only pioneers in Virginia sports betting, but they are also their city’s oldest and most successful sports franchise. They moved to the city from Boston in 1937, and have called the city home ever since.

In that time the Commanders won two NFL Championships before the AFL-NFL merger, along with three Super Bowls in 1982, 1987, and 1991.

Washington Nationals

The Washington Nationals moved to the city in 2005, giving fans their first professional baseball team to support since 1971. While the team initially struggled, they eventually found their feet thanks to their pair of number one draft picks Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper.

As the team found their identity they became regular winners of the National League East, before the Nationals finally secured their first – and, to date, only – World Series win in 2019.

Washington Capitals

The Washington Capitals were founded in 1974 as an NHL expansion franchise, finally bringing a professional hockey team to the city. However, success did not come easy to them.

The Capitals were once best known for never having a championship year despite their incredible 14 season playoff streak between 1983 and 1996. However, they eventually broke through in 2018 when the team finally won their first Stanley Cup.

Washington Wizards

The Washington Wizards arrived in the city in 1973 as the Capital Bullets, having moved there from Chicago via Baltimore. The team hit the ground running, winning their only NBA Championship soon after in 1978.

The Wizards have struggled to be contenders in recent years, though, and are perhaps best known in the 21st century as having been home to the legendary Michael Jordan’s short-lived basketball return.
